Yorkshire business leaders in running for UK Entrepreneur Of The Year Award

Entrepreneur of the Year
Martin Port of Masternaut Three X has been shortlisted as a finalist for Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur Of The Year
28 April, 2008

28 April 2008: Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur Of The Year (EOY) finalists are announced today.

15 Yorkshire business leaders are short-listed among 44 contenders from across the North of England, all competing for the title North Entrepreneur Of The Year.

Winners will be announced at the North region awards banquet on 10th June at Manchester’s Hilton Hotel, in ten categories from Business to Consumer to Young Entrepreneur Of The Year.

Senior Partner Phillip Hilling at Ernst & Young in Leeds said: “The calibre of entrants is outstanding this year. It seems the current economic climate is not discouraging Yorkshire business men and women to shout about their success.

“We have particularly been impressed by the number of young entrepreneurs that have entered this year, who have already established successful, fast growth businesses so early on in their careers – a great sign for the Yorkshire economy.”

The EOY awards programme has been running for ten years in the UK and has recognised the achievements of some of Yorkshire’s finest business men and women including: Chris Rea of AES Engineering Ltd (2001, 2004); Emma Harrison of A4e Group Ltd (2003); Martin Penny of Jemella Ltd (2005); Assem Allam of Allam Marine Ltd (2005); Wynne Griffiths and Mike Parker of Young's Bluecrest Seafood Ltd (2006); and Jonathan Straight of Straight plc (2006).

Penny named as Judge

Martin Penny, MD of Silsden-based Jemella Group Ltd, will sit on this year’s independent judging panel.

Penny took the North Entrepreneur Of The Year title in 2005 and went on to be honoured as one of the UK’s leading entrepreneurs at the UK EOY finals in London, where he was crowned national Consumer Products Entrepreneur of the Year 2005.

Judges commended Martin for playing out ‘a classic entrepreneurial story’, developing a business out of nothing and achieving impressive profitable growth through calculated risk taking, excellent marketing and true passion.

Other judges include: James Newman, Chairman of Straight plc; Simon Nixon, MD of Moneysupermarket.com Group Plc; Dylan Thwaites, CEO of Latitude Group Ltd; Gary Jacobson, MD of Bifold Fluidpower Ltd; and John Walker, Director at Barclays Private Equity; and Beverley Jordan, Vice President of AstraZeneca UK Ltd.
