Quitters mean Christmas comes early for Cancer Research UK

Cash for Quitters
Prof Twelves and the Masternaut Three X quitters with an early Christmas present for Cancer Research UK
3 December, 2008

A LEEDS company will be delivering an early £11,250 Christmas present to Cancer Research UK scientists - thanks to nine of its employees quitting smoking.

Back in June, Martin Port, the Managing Director of vehicle-tracking firm Masternaut Three X, launched the ‘Cash For Quitters’ scheme, offering his employees who smoked a £2,500 bonus to kick the habit by Christmas.  And if they successfully quit, half of the money would go straight into their bank accounts - the other £1,250 given to Cancer Research UK on their behalf.

Now, a group of nine successful quitters from the Aberford-based company is set to hand over a giant Christmas present of £11,250 they’ve earned for the charity to Professor Chris Twelves, Deputy Director of Cancer Research UK’s Clinical Centre at St James’s Hospital, Leeds, during a special visit to their labs.

Martin Port, Managing Director of Masternaut Three X says: “Nothing gives us greater pleasure than to hand over this money, especially at this time of year. What's more, nothing gives me more pride – after all, it’s the colleagues at Masternaut Three X who have managed to achieve this amazing goal for Cancer Research UK.”

Successful quitter, Robert Sanders, says: “This has been just what I needed. I’ve banked myself a cool £1,250 just in time for Christmas, I’ve pretty much doubled that with the money I’ve saved on ciggies. But what’s most rewarding is that I’ve my family is thrilled I’ve given up – I always had it hanging over me that I should quit for the sake of my children, I now I’ve done the right thing… and I can taste my wife’s lovely cooking again”.

Prof Twelves said: “Giving up smoking is the best present a smoker can give themselves. These successful quitters deserve our congratulations in getting this far and support in staying free from the addiction. Masternaut Three X should also be congratulated for supporting their employees in giving up smoking. Thanks to their efforts, Cancer Research UK will also benefit and the money raised will be used to help fund our research into reducing the number of people affected by cancer."

Statistically, employees who smoke take greater sickness absence from work than their non smoking counterparts.  Tobacco kills one in two of all long term users and still causes over one in four of all cancer deaths in the UK.  Two thirds of smokers start before 18.
