Masternaut satellites track the news on the streets

17 July, 2006

Newspaper deliveries across Scotland are being aided by satellites following the fitting of a sophisticated tracking system that reports minute-by-minute movements over the Internet.  Supplied by telematics firm Masternaut to leading newspaper group The Scotsman Publications Ltd (TPSL), the live web system is helping to ensure on-time delivery of approximately 100,000 newspapers per day including the Evening News and the Scotsman.

Masternaut is delivering measurable cost efficiencies by reducing unauthorised use of company vehicles, enhancing vehicle service records and improving customer service.  Utilising GPS satellite positioning, high speed mobile communications and online street mapping, fleet managers are provided with easy to use, web based access to vehicle movements, every minute of the day.  Masternaut also provides an ‘out of hours’ alert system that transmits notification of any vehicle movement during non-working hours by email and text message.

"Masternaut saves us money. By monitoring vehicle activity both during the working day and out of hours we have reduced our total mileage giving us an estimated saving of over £10,000 per annum "The vehicle based reports provided by Masternaut also enable us to schedule our vehicle servicing with increased intelligence reducing unplanned maintenance and vehicle down time." Said Rob Kelly, The Scotsman’s Transport and Distribution Manager.

The Scotsman, Scotland’s oldest daily newspaper, is published and distributed from the company’s purpose built headquarters at Holyrood in Edinburgh. Each day approximately 100,000 newspapers, hot from the ‘presses’, make the journey to newsagents and other retail outlets throughout Scotland. In addition to the detailed tracking information captured by Masternaut, managers can also use the system to create detailed delivery schedules for each vehicle.  With the location of over 1,200 newsagents mapped using Masternaut, the service automatically calculates the optimum route for each vehicle taking into account any restrictions such as vehicle capacity, delivery deadlines and other ad hoc requirements.

"Before Masternaut the first we knew of problems with daily deliveries was a call from the retail outlets. Now we can be pro-active with our customer service. If a vehicle is unavoidably delayed we can use the schedule information and vehicle position to monitor the planned itinerary against the actual. We can then contact only the outlets affected and provide them with a revised delivery time." Said Kelly. "This saves us time, as we only make the calls we need to and it improves our relationship with the retailers."
