Masternaut keeps TNT Newsfast ontime

3 May, 2006

Masternaut has won a major contract with TNT Newsfast to equip 800 vehicles with a ‘time alert’ satellite tracking system. Providing live vehicle location via the Internet, the system incorporates specially developed geo-fencing to help TNT Newsfast operate within crucial 20 minute delivery slots.

TNT Newsfast, incorporating TNT Network Logistics, collects newspapers from print centres for delivery to newspaper wholesalers in the small hours of the morning. Schedules are so tight that if a delivery is 20 minutes late – a ‘drop dead’ time is reached where secondary distribution to retailers has to begin.

TNT Newsfast has customised Masternaut to alert when vehicles reach key stages of their journey. Using geo-fenced zones, arrival and departure times and estimated time of arrivals are reported; wholesalers receive 20 minute pre-alerts via a mobile phone SMS message. Entire routes are also being geo-fenced to alert if a vehicle diverts off a pre-defined route or is running late.

Since Masternaut works via the web, it provides TNT with an instant network so that everyone has total and live visibility of the delivery operation – all via a very easy-to-use web browser interface. Staff at print centres, the head office and at the wholesalers can see live journey progress and check for on-screen updates and alerts. Masternaut also enables an instant reaction should problems occur on route, such as traffic congestion.

“Time is the big factor in our business. Nothing is quite as time-critical as daily newspapers and Masternaut gives total visibility of the progress of all vehicles around the clock. Even seconds can be crucial and our geo-fencing developments ensure that vital information on vehicle progress is reported automatically; helping us to deliver right on time, every time” says Mark O’Connor, TNT Newsfast Divisional Director.

“We took an extensive look at all the vehicle tracking options and Masternaut was short listed together with two systems we already had. We were impressed with Masternaut’s clever use of the web, receptive attitude, and willingness to push technology to the limit. Add easy deployment, simplicity of use and important geo-fencing capability and Masternaut had the winning formula” comments Sean Sherwin-Smith, General Manager, Strategy and Development, TNT Newsfast.

TNT Newsfast was established in 1986 for the delivery of newspapers and then magazines, and through TNT Network Logistics, expanded its business into stationery, packaging and books. With the acquisition of Taylor Barnard in 2000, the growth of the FMCG business for both manufacturers and importers and for the major supermarkets, increased substantially.
