Masternaut tracks David Walliams in Sport Relief 140 mile sponsored swim

Masternaut tracks David Walliams in Sport Relief 140 mile sponsored swim
10 October, 2011

For the second consecutive year Masternaut's Asset Tracking technology was used by Sport Relief, this time to provide location information for The BT Sport Relief Challenge: Walliams vs The Thames, which saw TV star David Walliams swim the 140 miles of the Thames over eight days. Masternaut provided Sport Relief with robust asset tracking technology which transmitted David's precise location to the Sport Relief website as he swam for eight days from as close to the source of the Thames as possible to Westminster.

Masternaut's Asset Tracking technology was attached to two safety boats that accompanied David, pinpointing his exact location over the eight day period. The data supported the Sport Relief progress map which staggeringly was viewed by nearly half a million people. To allow supporters to stay fully up-to-date with David's progress, the website map also featured live, location-based tweets from the Sport Relief team. This year's challenge followed in the footsteps of Masternaut's previous work with Sport Relief, live-tracking the BT Sport Relief Million Pound Bike Ride in 2010. The cycle challenge saw over 203,000 people view the online tracker which jumped dramatically to well over 446,000 for this year's challenge.

Marcus East, Head of Future Media and Technology at Sport Relief, said: "Masternaut's generosity in providing this gift in kind and their excellence in this field meant that we were delighted, and incredibly grateful, to work with them for a second consecutive year. The asset tracking technology provided by Masternaut is accurate and reliable, and although more commonly used to monitor utilisation and asset performance, it was able to precisely and successfully monitor David's brave attempt. We needed a partner who would be able to give us the depth of analysis required to produce live progress for the supporters at home."

"Although our technology is more commonly used commercially to measure utilisation and asset performance, we are delighted to have provided a simple location service to help supporters track David's progress over the eight day period. For David's own safety, and to minimise GPS signal distortion underwater, we made the decision to locate the tracking technology on two accompanying support boats," added Steve Towe, Managing Director Europe for Masternaut. "Masternaut is proud to support such a cause, for the second consecutive year, which continues to transform millions of lives around the world."

The 140 mile challenge saw the comedian swim for up to eight hours a day, over eight days, beginning at Lechlade, Gloucestershire and passing through locations including Oxford, Reading, Henley, Maidenhead and Windsor to reach the Capital.
