Masternaut proves a success for Wigan Council

Wigan Council
1 December, 2005

Masternaut’s telematics technology is set to be installed across the fleet of service vehicles operated by Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council. This follows a highly successful pilot project where Masternaut provided accurate, up to the minute vehicle locations made available to fleet managers via an easy to use web interface.

Masternaut uses GPS technology to record the position of each vehicle; the position is then transmitted via GPRS and logged against street level mapping. This information, which is continually streamed, is available to the Council’s fleet managers in real time via any Internet enabled computer. E-mailed reports provide an accurate time log of all vehicle movements and activities; useful for managing resources and assessing service delivery performance.

Masternaut was first installed on vehicles from a number of departments in order to assess the potential benefits to the Council. Vehicles that took part in the nine month pilot project included welfare vehicles operated by the Social Service Department, street cleansing vehicles and highways vehicles including gritters, gully emptying vehicles and jetting units.

“We wanted to fully explore the type of information that Masternaut could deliver, and how that information could be used to improve the services we provide to residents of Wigan.” Said Ken Richardson, Contracts Manager for Transport at Wigan Council. “Not only does the system provide an up to the minute picture of vehicle positions which enables us to locate vehicles quickly and accurately in order to respond call out requests, it also provide an historical archive of vehicle movements. This information provides a valuable record of street based activity which enables us to demonstrate that we are meeting new government regulations.”

Following the successful completion of the pilot project the Council is aiming to roll out the system over the forthcoming months. A number of departments within the Council have expressed an interest and it is estimated that in the region of eighty to one hundred vehicles will have Masternaut installed. “As this system is rolled out we are keen to explore other ways that we can use it. Routing and vehicle navigation are obvious services that our fleet will benefit from.” Continued Richardson.
