Sandwell sweeps-away paperwork with Masternaut satellite tracking

Sandwell Council has seen dramatic improvements in its street cleansing services following trials of an advanced satellite tracking service. Using a web-based service from telematics company Masternaut, the precise movements of street sweeping vehicles are transmitted in real time to council fleet controllers giving a complete picture of the work in progress.

Sandwell, which borders Birmingham and is home to almost 300,000 people, reports an improvement in service response times by at least 100% using the new system. The live tracking allows the nearest sweeper to be identified and re-routed in response to special service requests. This has dramatically improved the reaction time in dealing with incidents such as spillages.

Masternaut records routes and times at each location completely automatically. This has eliminated paper records that had previously had to be kept by drivers as they moved from location to location. This alone has saved considerable time, allowing drivers to spend more time undertaking their vital road sweeping work.

“To ensure the council covers any liability issues, drivers have had to manually record over 500,000 locations each year. With Masternaut’s tracking logs, this task is completely automatic and because it involves no human involvement, the data is much more accurate and reliable.” Says Andy Pearsall of Sandwell MBC.

The service has reduced mobile phone usage and costs, improving productivity and driver safety. Not only has Masternaut eliminated calls to find out where a vehicle is, but an integral phone messaging service can be used to relay job details direct to drivers as a convenient phone message. Drivers are also lone workers and the service has the added benefit of doubling as a safety system, keeping a safe watch of driver whereabouts.

“The basic Masternaut system is very good, but it can be adapted easily for different requirements. This is very beneficial as we get exactly what we need. Whether seen as a cost saver, safety tool or independent performance assessor, our initial experience has shown that Masternaut provides benefits all around. As a result, we are now planning more extensive roll-out” says Andy Pearsall.
