Richmond improves passenger services with Masternaut satellite and phone tracking

The London Borough of Richmond on Thames is improving its transport services with the latest phone location and satellite tracking technology from Masternaut. Council buses are the first to benefit, with live tracking that allows real-time scheduling and monitoring using GPS and GPRS to relay live information to the web. At the same time 50 workers involved in escorted routes have mobile phone tracking allowing their location to also be checked through the Masternaut website.

Richmond provides transport to schools, care centres and other sites for residents such as the elderly, people with learning difficulties, and children with special needs. With bookings changing throughout the day, routes change continually as requests come in for pick-ups from homes around the borough.

Masternaut provides live control so that services can be managed dynamically, responding to requests as the day progresses. Knowledge of the whereabouts of vehicles is also helpful for responding to enquiries about any delays and allows estimated times of arrival to be given based on the latest information.

Masternaut also provides a valuable log of activities to keep a check on service performance. Performance can be monitored closely by keeping a check on arrival and departure times and ensuring service conditions, such as maximum time in transit, are kept in check.

The phone tracking service is a new development from Masternaut that provides a convenient way to locate staff accompanying children and people needing special care. It simply requires a phone to be switched on so that transport control can immediately locate staff without the need for any special equipment.

Masternaut won the contract to supply Richmond following a tender process where it was identified as the ideal system at the right cost. The council are looking to add in-vehicle PDA devices using Masternaut's M-Schedule system. This will allow live service requests to be sent to drivers with navigation to any address displayed through on-screen maps and voice instructions.

That added control, coupled with electronic records of actual service delivery, will help us to maintain service levels and gain much better management control" says Robert Flower, Operation and Customer Services Manager of Richmond Transport Services.
