Hillingdon live track council service vehicles on the Web using Masternaut

Hillingdon
1 January, 2000

Masternaut has won a contract to pilot its satellite tracking and vehicle information service to the London Borough of Hillingdon. Street sweepers are amongst the first vehicles to be equipped with the system, which provides real-time tracking and status information via an Internet-connected PC. The council will be using Masternaut to improve driver safety, security, customer service and resource utilisation.

Hillingdon, who operate a fleet of 240 vehicles for a wide range of council services, is the first UK council to take advantage of Masternaut’s ‘always on’ tracking service using GPRS mobile communications. Designed specifically as a Web service, Masternaut provides Hillingdon with easy, instant access to fleet information around the clock.

In Waste Management, Masternaut will watch over Hillingdon’s fleet of street sweepers, providing a log of routes linked to sensors recording ‘brush down’ status. Equipped vehicles include small Schmidt precinct and pavement sweepers, mid-sized Scarabs, and a full-sized road sweeper.

“Masternaut provides proof of work completed so we can keep a check on service performance and respond straight away to any service requests. Masternaut will also help us to work smarter with the logged information allowing us optimise routes and improve services where needed most” says Hillingdon’s Fleet Manager, Richard Winter.

Hillingdon are also looking at equipping the council’s welfare bus services. This bus fleet provides essential transport to get needy residents to clinics, schools, clubs and other welfare services. The demand is ever-changing, with different people requiring transport to a different places and many needing special care. Live vehicle location will help improve services through quicker response, better emergency back-up, more flexible utilisation and improved routing.

Although street sweepers are the first to be equipped, Hillingdon see plenty of potential elsewhere in fleet services. “On security factors alone, vehicle tracking could be justified across much of the fleet now that, with Masternaut, costs that are beginning to make financial sense. However, we will start where the need is most evident and assess the benefits step by step” says Richard Winter.
